I bought the kids a ginger bread house this year to do with Grandma Lotspeich. They all had a blast. Grandma would put icing on the house and the kids would put candies on it. Not all of the candy was put on the house because as with most kids, they would put a couple pieces on the house and eat a couple of pieces, But it still turned out really well.
